Three Dishes for Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving—
grateful for extra helpings
of cousins
new world
learning to celebrate
turkey kimchi flan
Around
The old table
We stretch ourselves to share
The year’s sweet and salty harvest
Again.
Last week Teaching Authors put out a challenge to write a Thanku. I’ve posted my effort above and a cinquain for dessert. It certainly was challenging to find a fresh approach to a holiday that is by definition traditional. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. For more Poetry Friday go to A Year of Reading.

I miss seeing my cousins, so love your ‘thanku’, makes me nostalgic for times long ago, Liz. Thank you!
These are great, Liz. Especially love the extra helping of cousins :)!
Hi, Liz. I am now going to be obsessed with turkey kimchi flan. Is there a recipe? It sounds amazing!
Nice poem, Liz! “turkey kimchi flan” – three words I would not have expected to see in the same breath!
What a beautiful Thanksgiving Poem! Hope you had a fabulous day. 🙂 Like the others, I’m intrigued by the turkey kimchi flan, sounds delish!
I love the ethnic mixing of your feast! I’m a fusion kind of girl myself!
One of my international students said on Tuesday, “My family doesn’t celebrate Thanksgiving,” which resulted in a fabulous discussion about how there is not one “right” way to give thanks, nor is there one “right” food to serve at the feast!
Linda and Jama,
This time I was inspired by the absence of cousins.
I’m looking forward to seeing them over the next holiday.
Mary Lee,
These are the kids I had in mind. Those in a new world, learning to celebrate new holidays, but also bringing their own flavors to the celebration. These families as well as those who have been here longer and are having to adapt as their traditions change with new participants.
Laura, Matt, Myra, and Ruth-
I made it up! Feel free to experiment!
Happy Holidays,
Liz
extra helpings of cousins–wonderful!
Hi Liz! I liked that “extra helping of cousins.”
i love that line about extra helping of cousins.
Thanks Laura!
I like the extra helpings of cousins, too. And all the “s” words in your cinquain. (Turkey kimchi flan sounds kind of scary to me…)
Thanks Tabatha. Sounds a little scary to me too!
This is really good Liz!!! We are studying poetry in English class, and I really enjoyed your writing!
