Chalk-A-Bration!

Betsy at Teaching Young Writers has us celebrating poetry and sidewalk chalk at the end of every month. My daughter and I decided to join the fun this last Saturday of August. Here’s my daughter’s poem:

What gets you to stop and look?
A red light?
A starry night?
A poem left on the sidewalk?

But here’s my favorite thing about putting my poem on the sidewalk. When my youngest son read it, he said, “Everything.”

Happy Saturday. Happy Chalk-a-bration.

Love your daughter’s chalketry dreams and your stop and look poem. My students weren’t quite so eloquent, but they enjoyed participating. I think they will enjoy this monthly tradition.

Oh my goodness, your son’s comment made me smile so big. Love it! Colorful dreams…beautiful image and I love the little swirls she added. Yours made me think about how poetry forces us to stop and notice, perfect!

Your daughter’s dreamy poem captures the feeling of chalk-a-bration perfectly to me! Your poem about noticing is really what poetry is all about isn’t it? Your son’s answer was fantastic! I wish more people thought that way!

I love your daughter’s poem about covering the sidewalk with colorful dreams – no wonder chalk-a-bration is such fun. What gets you to stop and look? A great question poem. . . and good inspiration as we launch writer’s notebooks next week. Yesterday we were on the walking route to a wedding, and a few folks stopped to check out our chalk fun!
