Box of Markers

I have a box of markers.
I use them all the time—
to draw a fleet of fire trucks,
a daffodil, a lime,

a mesmerizing tiger,
a purple plum, a tree,
but not another summer sky
above a glassy sea.

I have a box of markers,
but one of them is gone.
I wonder where it went to.
I wonder what it’s drawn.

I remember last year thinking I should have started my poem-a-day project a few days early so I could work ahead. This year, I’m thinking the exact same thing.

More tomorrow, I hope.

I love this bouncy little poem. I love the idea of the blue marker off on its own somewhere drawing skies and seas and delphiniums. Thanks for sharing this. It really put a smile on my face.

Oh, it’s just right, Liz. Like Rosi, it’s such fun to think about a marker going off on its own to do “its” thing. There is a hint that it’s blue, I see, earlier in the poem. Clever!

Love that “mesmerizing tiger” – and the concept of an AWOL marker out making its mark on the world! Much fun, Liz. And, hey, you at least HAVE a special month-long project, which is more than I can say for moi… ;0) Happy Poetry Month!

I think you are doing impressively well at keeping up, Liz–I just can’t get out of the just-in-time habit myself! What I love about this one is that it’s a color poem that does not actually mention any colors! And now I see that that was your intent. It works really well. Have you read “The Day the Crayons Quit”?
