The Cat by the Door

Dear Scout,
begs to go out,
not so she can hunt.

She doesn’t go
to fight a foe
or meet up with a friend.

She doesn’t run,
or stretch in the sun,
or nibble a blade of grass.

Dear Scout,
begs to go out
so she can sniff the wind.

Snow Cat

From the window she hunts

Snowflakes riding winter winds.

She leaps!

Pinning herself to the screen

Like a snow glob stuck to the glass

Before it seeps to the floor.

Snow Boy

From the window he hunts
Snowstorms riding distant winds.

He wishes!

Pressing himself to the cold

Like a breath that fogs the glass

Before it disappears.

Snow Girl

From the window she hunts

Snow angels riding glistening winds.

She peers.

Angling herself to the glass

Like a ray of sunlight that shines bright

Before breaking into color.

Snow Dog

From the window he hunts
Snow boots trudging through frigid winds.
He dreams!
Turning away from the cold
Like a door that shuts
Before the intruder arrives.

The Ants Invaded Kindergarten

The ants invaded Kindergarten
When we went out to play.
They ate our jelly crackers,
And they threw our plates away.
They sorted all the buttons
Into black and brown and not.
They must have moved the lizard
‘Cause he wasn’t in his spot.
They painted with the green,
But they seemed to use their feet.
Then they used the toilet,
And they didn’t raise the seat.
We think they played pretend
‘Cause the hats were on the floor.
They used the wooden blocks
To make a village with a store.
They changed the daily calendar.
Today’s now Saturday.
They pulled out all the alpha-books
And opened them to A.
They must have gotten tired
‘Cause when we came up the stairs
They all were sleeping soundly
In our cozy reading chairs.
The ants invaded Kindergarten
When we went out to play.
They seemed to have such fun,
We invited them to stay.

Guinea Pig Thoughts

Meeko

Meeko, what do you do all day

When I’m at school and far away?
What do you think while you sit in your cage,
Sniffing the air and chewing the hay?
Do you know where I’ve gone
And what I am doing?
Do you wonder what I smell?
Do you wonder what I’m chewing?

My Cat

Scout

Most of the day

she lazes and naps,
dreaming of sleeping
on warm, cozy laps.
But when it gets dark,
she parks by my bed,
and seems to be dreaming
of eating my head.
